PENGUINSThis cotton pillow cover is made from a batik painting designed by the noted batik artist Eko who lives in Yogyakarta in Central Java, one of the major centers of batik in Indonesia.
Batik is a wax resist method of decorating and dying fabric. Indonesian batik is made in one of two ways; stamped or drawn by hand. Stamping is done with a copper stamp or cap (pronounced ‘chop') that has been dipped in boiling wax which is applied to the fabric. This is a faster way of creating an overall pattern or border. In hand or tulis batik, the artist draws a freehand design on the cloth and then dips a canting (‘chanting') tool, a small copper container with a spout attached to a wood handle, into boiling wax, covering the areas meant to resist the dye. The fabric is boiled in order to remove the wax. This process is repeated for each color application.
Our pillow cover is batiked by hand and signed by the artist. The back of the cover is black cotton and the opening for the pillow form is closed by velcro. We can supply a form to fit the pillow for $6.00 upon request. The size is approximately 16 ˝ inches square.
